Change: make (someone or something) different; alter or modify
Most of us can think of at least one area of our lives that we’d like to change. Whether it’s finally quitting smoking, eating healthier, or getting more exercise, we all have those habits that we know are holding us back from being our best selves. The trouble is, making lasting change is hard. In fact, statistics show that only 8% of people who set New Year’s resolutions achieve their goals. If you’re looking to make a change this year that will stick, read on for some tips.
1. Set a specific goal
The first step to taking control of your life and making lasting change is to set a specific goal. This might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to be as specific as possible when setting your goals. “I want to lose weight” is not a specific enough goal – how much weight do you want to lose? By setting a definite number or goal weight, you’ll have something to work towards and measure your progress.
2. Make a plan
Creating lasting change in your life is not going to happen overnight – it takes time, effort, and planning. Once you’ve set your goal, sit down and map out a plan of action. What steps do you need to take in order to reach your goal? What obstacles might you encounter along the way? Planning ahead will help you stay on track when things get tough.
3. Set realistic expectations
When setting goals and making plans, it’s important to be realistic about what you can achieve. If you try to bite off more than you can chew, you’re likely to get discouraged and give up altogether. Shoot for something that is challenging but achievable – this will help keep you motivated throughout the process.
4. Find a role model or mentor
One of the best ways to create lasting change in your life is to find someone who has already achieved what you are striving for. Seeing someone else succeed at what you’re working towards can help inspire and motivate you to keep going even when things get tough. If possible, try to find someone who can act as a mentor or coach – someone who can offer advice and support along the way.
5. Stay positive
It’s inevitable that there will be setbacks along the road to change – that’s just part of the process. The important thing is not to let these setbacks deter you from your ultimate goal. Stay positive and keep moving forward; each step brings you closer to where you want to be ultimately.
6. Reward yourself
As you accomplish milestones along the way, take some time out for yourself! Give yourself credit for all the hard work you are doing and reward yourself with something special that helps motivate you even more (just make sure it isn’t undoing all your progress!) A night out with friends or family, a new outfit…whatever makes YOU happy!
7. Never give up
Remember why you started down this road in the first place – because YOU wanted to make a change in YOUR life for the better! Keep this in mind every time things get tough and never give up on yourself. You CAN do it!
