Procrastination: the action of delaying or postponing something.
We've all been there before. You're sitting at your desk, staring at a blank screen or an empty page, and you just can't seem to get started on that project that's due tomorrow. Or maybe you're avoiding making that doctor's appointment or cleaning out the garage. Whatever the task may be, we've all procrastinated at one point or another. But why do we do it? And more importantly, how can we overcome it?
Procrastination is a common problem that affects people of all ages. It can negatively affect your personal and professional life, and it can be hard to break the habit. But don't worry, we're here to help! Here are five tips to help you overcome procrastination:
1. Break the task into smaller parts:
If the task at hand seems insurmountable, break it down into smaller tasks that you can complete over time. For example, if you need to write a 10-page paper, start by writing one page per day.
2. Set a deadline for yourself:
In addition to the external deadlines set by your boss or professor, give yourself an internal deadline that's earlier than the actual deadline. This will give you a cushion in case you run into any roadblocks along the way.
3. Get rid of distractions:
Turn off your phone, close your email program, and find a quiet place to work where you won't be interrupted. Once you start working, you'll be surprised at how quickly time passes.
4. Take breaks:
Contrary to popular belief, taking breaks can help you get more work done in less time. Every 20 minutes or so, stand up and stretch or take a quick walk around the block. This will help improve your focus and concentration when you sit back to work.
5.( Reward yourself: After completing a task, give yourself a small reward—like a piece of candy or 10 minutes of surfing the web—to help motivate yourself for the next task.
Procrastination is a common problem, but it doesn't have to rule your life! You can get started on that long-awaited project today by following these tips!
